Magazine Layout
This brief is to develop a concept for a new magazine.
Choose one from the following three names: Margin, Crux, or Outpost.
Part A: Design a master head and cover for your magazine using your feature article as the main story you wish to promote. The cover should incorporate 'tasters' flagging up the content, an issue number/date and a barcode.
Part B: The magazine is going to have a feature article on the theme of exposure. Must research and find content, both text and images, to illustrate your interpretation of the theme. This research will also contribute to the final project of the module.
You are to produce two alternative sets of magazine pages (250mm height x 202mm width trimmed page size). Each of the sets will explore the use of different grid systems. Each set will consist of two double-page spreads, giving you a splash and a turn. Each set of spreads should feature the following:
- a headline (written by self)
- sub-head (written by self)
- at least one pull quote (written by self)
- one or more captions (written by self)

- running head/foot
- a minimum of 4 pictures (recommended trying different variations of imagery across different sets of spreads)
- a minimum of 600 words of dummy copy taken from any source
While basic content remains the same for each set of spreads, you need to explore the effects of using the following column structures: four columns and nine columns.
Explore the relationship between images, typographic elements and negative space. Should also explore effective typographic styling for all the elements within your information hierarchy.

I started by gathering some books from the library on magazine and editorial design. For social media, Pinterest and magazines go to designers' toolkit brief two.

Picking a topic
The main theme for this feature article is 'Exposure'. As I am free to explore this topic how I see fit, I want to pick a topic I feel strongly about myself.
I chose three different topics I felt quite strongly about, and asked ChatGPT to write me up some examples of how I could write about them.

After looking at different magazine covers, I realised that most magazine designs have real-life photography on the front.

Outcome:
I attempted to organise a photoshoot for my project, but it proved more difficult than expected. My wish for the photoshoot was to create an image that was joyful and showed off the topic for my article. However, that was particularly difficult due to scheduling and the time of year. I managed to get some photos, which I will edit and possibly make an article with, but I think I will steer more toward AI imaging.

Feedback key points:
- Need to focus more on the typography than imagery.
- Look at changing the main titles as they don't typographically look right.
- Master head area is very good
- Cover is good, just needs tweaking
- Look at the type layout on the first spread and see how i can make it flow better
