Layout and Alignment

This semester, I will be given a range of activities to complete in the weeks leading up to the end of the semester.
From weeks 1-5: Dedicated to exploring fundamental design structuring.
Week 6: One-to-one tutorials and check-ins (learning crit week) presentation of work thus far.
From weeks 7-11: Dedicated to two slightly longer creative projects designed to examine how visual communication can be manipulated.
Week 12: learning check and preparation for assessment.

Research

Exploiting the principles of alignment and hierarchy and the assets provided, create a poster for Outward Bound adventures.
• You must use all of the copy
• You must use the logo
• You must use at least three of the images
• You can create more than one ‘final’ poster
• You must use Illustrator to compose your final poster/s, though you can use Photoshop to colourise or overlay the images.
• You can introduce colour and/or texture in the type, images, background, etc.
• You can manipulate the type (e.g. tracking, leading, outlines, inlines, etc.)

The final poster/s isn’t the important thing, the exploration and use of the principles of layout are!
• Present your work on dedicated page on your website or blog.
• Deadline: 13:00 on Thursday 10th October

Group Research

As a group, we created a physical collage of all our research and images of posters we found visually interesting. We found a wall in the studio and decorated it with these images so we could see other peoples perspective of the project.

Starter plans / ideas:

I first sketched out some thumbnails for my poster design, experimenting with different layouts.

Adobe editing (photoshop and illustrator)

Poster idea one:
For this first poster, I edited my photography, as shown below. Then, I started layering text, moving it around, and manipulating it in various ways.
It feels very crowded with information, however I do like the image background does work quite well.
Picture
Poster idea two:
I wanted to go a more traditional and standard route for this poster. I used the edited image from the previous poster and layered everything differently.
This one is quite boxy/blocky, and doesn't have a lot of flow.
Picture
Poster idea three:
I chose to take inspiration from a poster I saw on my Pinterest research board. I kept a blocky-like layout whilst still making it flow nicely.
Picture
Poster idea four:
I made sure that this poster had a lot more flow, and I was inspired by the drip effect I saw on Pinterest posters.
To improve this one, I would add more depth with lines or guides.
This is my least favourite poster design

Poster idea five:
This is the before and after of a crit session. I added the link and changed the body text to make it more legible, as well as experimenting with the scale of the body text and the logo.
